ARTIST STATEMENT – PEGGY LUDERER

The relationship between architecture and human activity within the natural environment inspires me. Urban architecture reflects layers of history and I love the interplay of the old and new. Like many New England based artists, I find the light here very seductive. Several years ago, I began a container series. By exploring containers and the objects they hold, the sometimes whimsical compositions combine trompe l’eoil painting techniques with found objects. In the past, I have worked in batik, and pen and ink, but began working in watercolor after taking a class. I am currently painting with oils. My process usually begins with the camera and I often combine elements from several photos in compositions that are refined in my studio.

I grew up in a small town not far from Chicago. My family of artists loved visiting the Art Institute — making me into a museum nerd. My father, a mechanical engineer turned contractor, exposed us to construction and architecture and I still love the smell of freshly cut wood and seeing the precision work of master carpenters. During college, I attended the Drew University Semester on the Arts in New York City. Since earning a BA in Art from DePauw University, my husband’s career has taken our family of 5 all over the US and overseas affording us the opportunity for fabulous cultural experiences.

I have taken classes and workshops whenever possible. Previous work includes teaching art in both the public schools and 171 Cedar Art Center in Corning, NY., designing embroidery, and doing many pen and ink drawings. After earning a Decorating Certificate at Indiana University and Purdue University in Indianapolis, as well as course work at Bellevue College in Bellevue, WA, I worked as an Interior Decorator. For the past 15 years I have treasured my experience as a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
